Parable of the Talents

Dear Church Family,

In my personal quiet time, I am finishing up the Book of Matthew. In Matthew Chapter 25, it talks about being ready for the return of Christ. The first parable is of ten virgins. Five of the virgins are wise and five are foolish. The wise virgins don’t waste their oil on frivolous activity, but keep their eyes focused on the return of the bridegroom. The five foolish virgins waste their time sleeping and slumbering. The indication is that they lost their focus on the bridegroom. As followers of Christ, we need to be intentional about how we use our time. Christ is coming back. There is no doubt about that. We have to maximize our time in reaching the lost for Christ.

The second parable is about the talents. The master hands out five talents to one servant, he hands out two to another servant and finally one talent to another servant. The master goes on a long trip. When the master finally returns, he settles up with his servants. The servant he gave five talents had doubled his fortune by making five additional talents. The servant he gave two double his earnings by making two more talents. The servant he gave one talent to buried his talent because he was lazy and afraid. The master was angry with the servant for his laziness and his wasteful attitude. He took the one talent he gave him and gave it to the one he had given five talents. What is the point of the parable? God has invested in all His children talents and gifts to be used to be fruitful for His Kingdom. One day He is going to return to settle up with us with regard to His investments. I pray you will be intentional about using God’s gifts and talents to increase the fruitfulness of God’s Kingdom! What are you doing now to make sure people are strengthen in their walk with Christ through you? Are you leaving the fragrance of Jesus on those that you encounter on a daily basis? Let me put it this way, would someone want to become a follower of Christ after they watch your life? I hope that is true of you and I.

In Christ,

Pastor David
